Yanukovich promises to release people detained in clashes with Berkut
The Ukrainian President announced it at his meeting with ex-Presidents Kravchuk, Kuchma and Yushchenko.
The meeting was held on December 10 and the recording was shown on TV later. The President promised to release the protesters detained on suspicion of organization of mass riots.
“Those who did not violate the order much will be released. Those who have small children and so on will also be released. I want to turn this page over as soon as possible,” Yanukovich claimed.
Several dozen people were jailed after the dispersal of the first European Maidan, in clashes near Bankavaya Square and near the President’s Administration. They were detained illegally and should be released without delay, the opposition says. Human rights activists are drawing attention to the violation of the rights of the arrested and unfair trials. The terms of detention were pronged to two months for most of the detained.
