Belarusian artist and former political prisoner Rygor Kiyko dies
He died of cancer at age 64 on October 3.
As reported by Radio Liberty, in 1997 during the celebration of Freedom Day, he defended the white-red-white flags, which police snatched from protesters. The artist was detained, he spent three months in Valadarka and then spent two years in penal settlement. Later he participated in the defense of Kurapaty, was severely beaten.
Rygor Kiyko was born in Luhansk region of Ukraine, then his family moved to Babruisk. He graduated from the Belarusian Theatre and Art Institute. He was an artist-ceramist and a member of the Pahonia community. He was a member of the Belarusian Popular Front from the moment of party and movement formation. After the split in 1999, he was a member of the CCP BPF.
