Electoral commission chairperson suggests presidential elections could take place in autumn 2010
Lidziya Yarmoshyna, the chairperson of the Central Election Commission, told Belapan news agency that she does not rule out the presidential elections could take place in the autumn of 2010. In her view, it would more convinient to hold the polls by New Year. At the same time, Yarmoshyna stressed that nobody had any consultations with her regarding the date of the elections. According to Yarmoshyn, the date of the presidential elections is a political issue. She had said earlier that the best date for the polls would be February 6, 2011.
Analysts reckons that holding the presidential election in the fall is benefitial to the authorities, because it will change cards of Alexander Lukashenka's political opponents. The opposition now is split, so the earlier date of the presidential elections can give a huge advantage to the incumbent. In 2006, the presidential elections were initially scheduled for the summer but took place in March. The opposition did not expect that and had little time to spin off their candidate.
Under the law, presidential elections must be set not later than five months before.
