Around 1000 people attended the traditional opposition-staged rally in Minsk on Saturday to mark the anniversary of 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
On April 26 at 1600, nearly 1000 people gathered near the Kastrycnik movie theater in Minsk and later proceeded towards the remote Bangalore square. No detentions were reported.
When in the square, many participants did not want to go through security checks in order to enter the sealed off area as they thought it was degrading. Some of participants went in to approach the stage where organizers made speeches. Many participants began to leave the areaprior to the conclusion of the event.
The Chernobyl nuclear accident occurred on April 26, 1986, with 70% of the nuclear fall-out contaminating the south-eastern territories of Belarus.
