The Belarusian cameraman’s body has not been found so far although the court found the people who had abducted him.
Belarusian cameraman and journalist of the Russian First Channel Zmitser Zavadski went missing 15 years ago – on July 7, 2000. He was 27 years old.
Zavadski and reporter Pavel Sharamet were arrested and accused of illegal crossing of the Belarusian-Lithuanian border when making a report in the spring of 1997. He was put on probation for 1.5 years. Zavadski and Sharamet worked in Chechnya in 1999-2000. They were shooting the film Chechen Diary there, BelaPAN reports.
Zavadski left his house and headed for the National Airport Minsk to meet Sharamet who was going to arrive from Moscow on the morning of July 7, 2000. Nobody has seen him since then. His car was found at the airport.
Minsk Province Court returned ex-member of the riot police Valery Ihnatovich of the abduction of Zavadski in 2002. He had met the journalist in Chechnya. Ihnatovich and another suspect, Maksim Malik, were sentenced to life imprisonment. The case was suspended in 2004 because the missing person had not been found. The investigation was resumed in 2005 and suspended again a year later. Zmitser Zavadski’s body has not been found so far.
