Belarusians will not be deported from Sweden for the time being. The decisions that had already been issued have been suspended, the Belarusians who found themselves in this situation told Euroradio.
Sweden is highly reluctant to grant international protection to Belarusians and force them to leave the country after refusing. However, the authorities have decided to reconsider the applications because of the scandal.
The deportation decisions already taken will be suspended during the review.
As previously reported, the scandal broke out after Sweden refused to grant asylum to a Belarusian man and his mother, who were threatened with political persecution in their home country. The man was deported to Belarus via the border with Lithuania. He was immediately detained at the border.
An internal investigation was launched in Sweden, and the Migration Agency promised to review asylum cases for Belarusian citizens.
