Birthday greetings from Barack Obama to Belarusian centenarian (photo)
American President Barack Obama has congratulated Belarusian Yazep Leshchanka (poet Mihas Kavyl) on his 100th birthday. He was born in Slutsk District on December 1, 1915. He was repressed by the Soviet authorities, served in the Red Army during the WWII and was in captivity in Germany. He migrated to the USA after the WWII. His lives in South River, one of the centres of the Belarusian community.
Mihas Kavyl’s relatives and friends marked his 100th anniversary on November 29, Nasha Niva reports. A choir sang Mnogaya Leta for him in Euphrosyne of Polotsk Church.
