Book about death penalty in Belarus is presented in Oslo
The book Death Penalty in Belarus was presented at the World Congress Against the Death Penalty in Oslo, Norway, on June 22.
The book is written by a group of authors. It was translated into English and published before the congress. The cover shows Alyaksandr Hrunou’s prison overalls with the inscription ‘capital punishment’. He was returned guilty of the brutal murder of a Homel student in 2014. Hrunou’s mother received the overalls instead of his personal belongings after the execution.
Facts and numbers connected with the death penalty in Belarus are collected in the book. It also contains the historical analysis of the death penalty in our country and its transformation depending on the epoch and political regimes. Belarusian human rights defenders are planning to continue publishing books dedicated to this problem in the future. They would like to help people understand that the death penalty is not a civilized method of punishment and crime prevention.
More than 400 people have been sentenced to death since the declaration of Belarus’ independence. Only one person was pardoned by Alyaksandr Lukashenka, BelaPAN reports.
