The idea to install monuments to the Lukashenkas has not been supported in Mahilyou. The project “Barge Haulers on a Community Work Day” was suggested by local inhabitant Alyaksei Paulouski. He wanted to immortalize the participation of the President’s family in such events.
Paulouski sent the appeal signed by 17 inhabitants of Mahilyou to Mahilyou and Minsk City Executive Committees, Radio Liberty reports. He called Lukashenka’s help “a historic event and a citizen’s feat’. Such a monument would attract tourists, the initiator told officials. However, Mahilyou City Executive Committee rejected the idea. Alyaksei Paulouski is going to lodge a complaint to the Regional Executive Committee because he has not received any forcible arguments.
Minsk authorities have not replied yet. Ideologists’ will discuss Palouski’s appeal.
His action shows ‘that Soviet epoch ideas are still rooted in Belarusian leaders’ heads’, Paulouski said. People are being forced to take part in unpaid community work days and they cannot refuse to do it, he stressed. “This is window dressing,” the inhabitant of Mahilyou concluded.
