Russian soldiers to guard nuclear weapons in Belarus - BYPOL

Thousands of Russian military personnel will be sent to Belarus to guard nuclear weapons, BYPOL reports, citing its sources. It is said that negotiations have been going on for several months, involving the Ministry of Defense, Aliaksandr Lukashenka personally, Vladimir Putin and their administrations. From the very beginning, Moscow stated that the tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus would be guarded by the Russian military. The talks also focused on the deployment of a Russian military unit with heavy equipment in Belarus. It will consist of 3.5-5 thousand soldiers.

Lukashenka resisted this project, but eventually "gave in," according to BYPOL. Initially, the territory of the Mahiliou region was considered for the deployment of the Russian military.
