US, EU disappointed with Navalny's sentence
The leader of the Russian opposition has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for embezzlement.
We are deeply disappointed with the verdict of @Navalny and obvious political motives of the trial," U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul wrote on Twitter.
Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said the verdict of the Lenin district court of Kirov raised serious questions as to the state of the rule of law in Russia.
According to ВВС, Ashton also said she hoped the sentences to Navalny and his ally Pyotr Ofitserov would be reconsidered in the appeal process.
